Leo, The Friendly Obedient Playful Lhasa Apso.

We all, especially my three-year-old younger son, were fortunate enough to spend some truly memorable moments with my sister's beloved pet, Leo, a charming Lhasa Apso, during our holiday in Bangalore. Watching a little child and a gentle dog discover each other was a heart-warming spectacle in itself. Neither spoke the other's language, yet both communicated effortlessly through curiosity, trust and uncomplicated affection. It reminded me that the purest relationships are often built without words.

Originally bred in the lofty monasteries of Tibet as vigilant guard dogs, it is remarkable how comfortably Leo has acclimatised himself to Bangalore's pleasant climate and equally pleasant lifestyle. He possessed that rare combination of energy and serenity. Intelligent, devoted, obedient, patient and remarkably docile, Leo seemed to understand exactly when to play, when to accompany someone quietly and when simply to sit beside you as silent company. One could only dream of such an easy-going, undemanding and affectionate companion.

I particularly loved cuddling him. His dense, silky, woolly coat made every embrace wonderfully comforting, but it was his expressive personality that truly won our hearts. Leo had an extraordinary way of communicating happiness. A gentle nuzzle against my chest, an enthusiastic wag of his tail and those soulful eyes conveyed emotions far more eloquently than words ever could. Dogs possess that rare gift of making one feel important simply by being delighted with one's presence.

Our brief acquaintance with Leo left behind memories far greater than the number of days we spent together. If, in the future, we ever decide to welcome a pet into our own family once the children are older, Leo has already made the choice remarkably easy. It would almost certainly be a Lhasa Apso. Some encounters quietly leave paw prints not merely on the floor, but on the heart. Leo undoubtedly did exactly that.
